Last week Jon Kolby and I went hiking in the Pyrenees. And it was glorious!
Below are photos taken by myself and Jon (@myfrogcroaked). We shared a camera and can’t remember who took what, so here’s a taste of what we both captured! We hope you enjoy them :)
Aside from the breathtaking landscapes, we saw some pretty neat wildlife. Many lizards, some unexpected frogs, chamois and marmots… as well as an asp viper! Just casually crossing the trail.
Day 1: We began at the Pont d’Espagne with some very impressive waterfalls. After hiking up the Marcadau Valley we found a lush spot to wild camp in the evening.
Day 2: We hiked over a dramatic pass into the Gaube Valley. This involved navigating past several high altitude lakes, before crossing the border into Spain. It was quite a remarkable change in landscape and a bizarre hike across steep scree slopes, but about an hour later we returned back into France and descended to the Ouillets de Gaube refuge. Here we were welcomed by a much needed glass of wine and a dorm bed to sleep in.
Day 3: We watched the sun rise and cast beams of light through the clouds and onto the glacial wall at the base of the mountain. Then, we hiked down the Gaube Valley, with the huge, turquoise crystal clear lake appearing in front of us, where we stopped to make some lunch. After another hour of hiking, we made it safely back to the car and completed this mini adventure!
